Support the New Marathon and So Much More!
It was just a couple weeks ago, on October 28, after the final curtain at BAM's Next Wave for our new piece "Road Trip," hanging together with our friends and heroes (most notably our brilliant Bang on a Can All-Stars!) that it really hit us. Bang on a Can is 30, but it feels like we're just getting started. With the benefit of hindsight, we can fully appreciate how the world has changed since we first dreamt up the Marathon back in 1987.
So much incredible music is being made by so many wildly creative composers, crossing every conceivable genre or boundary. The scene for new music has never been better. Ensembles, festivals, venues, operas, recordings, podcasts, collaborations of every sort…and not just in NYC. There are brand new top-notch contemporary musicians and composers all over the nation and world, and many of them we know intimately through our Summer Festival at MASS MoCA, which has now helped launch more than 500 alumni into the musical stratosphere. It's an exhilarating time to be a musician, and that sustains us even when world events seem scary, even perilous.
Composers have always seemed to us to be Utopian by nature, seeking new ways to communicate complex ideas and seeking new connections and pathways that don't present themselves readily. Art literally rearranges the known world. It prods, coaxes or provokes a new paradigm, even a new reality. Change can be good, and GOOD change is even better! We feel very much a part of an extended family that is working towards GOOD change, and a better, more creative reality where thoughts can flow freely and people can play music across borders, genres and ideologies. There are some big ideas packed into those notes on a page!
All these years later, we still get amped to program our big annual NYC concert - the Bang on a Can Marathon. It's our chance to reflect and celebrate and showcase. For next year's big show we've decided to partner with NYU's Skirball Center, for a couple great reasons beyond their enthusiasm. One, it's an excellent acoustical environment and a step-up from our festive yet sonically-challenged cavernous rooms of the past few years. Two, we think that Greenwich Village represents a geographical and historical center. We are returning to downtown NYC home of Charles Ives and Edgard Varese and John Cage and Ornette Coleman and Henry Threadgill and Thelonious Monk and Meredith Monk and Elliott Carter and Steve Reich and Philip Glass and La Monte Young and Laurie Anderson and John Zorn - where American Experimentalism was born. So much epoch-changing art, theater, music, literature happened right here, in the center of NYC. Another plus: it's easy to get to from anywhere in the metropolis!
With humility and thanks, we're asking you to support the Marathon this year, in particular, as well as all our programs and commissions. We look forward to thanking you on our website and on every program as supporter and commissioner for the coming year. For the largest gifts we offer added incentives, like for a gift of $100 or more you'll be guaranteed a seat at the concert throughout the Marathon. (No small promise for a concert that's FREE to ALL!) And we have other cool stuff, like brand new records and tickets to shows and even special intimate events and experiences.
But at no matter what level you support us, our gratitude is as big and heartfelt as the day we launched that very first concert. Without help, we'd never have gotten here. And without your help, we can't make our way forward. THANK YOU!!!
