Robert Black: Possessed
Possessed is a site-specific environmental duet, partnering the physical and acoustical beauty of Moab, Utah's natural habitat with Robert Black's evocative double bass improvisation. Through Possessed, Robert and his team of videographers, audio engineer, photographer and visual artist plumb the sonic depths of where humans and nature meet, celebrating the interactivity of this most fundamental yet complex relationship.
Possessed will be a state-of-the-art multimedia release on Cantaloupe Music consisting of three parts: a hi-definition surround sound DVD capturing Robert’s improvisatory collaboration with Moab’s stunning natural environment; a stereo CD featuring both music from the DVD as well as additional exclusive material; and Possessed: The Devil's Garden, a visual art companion book to the DVD featuring original photography and art by Elliott Fredouelle.
A founding member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Robert also has a long collaborative history with Moab, Utah, first performing there in 1992. Robert describes:
In 1992, Michael Barrett and Leslie Tomkins invited me to a festival they were starting in Moab, Utah to play Schubert's 'Trout Quintet.' After making the eight hour drive from Denver in my dad's baby blue Pontiac LeMans through the spectacular Rocky Mountains, I pulled into to a nighttime Moab experiencing a torrential thunder storm. Several blinding and deafening flashes of lightening plunged the entire town into darkness. I really didn't know where I was, but I knew it was someplace special. Welcome to Moab.
Then in 1995 after a late summer concert in Star Hall, some friends invited me to bring my bass to a midnight drumming session at 'the culvert.' A little after 12am, I drove by this culvert and heard a wild drumming emanating from the massive hollow. Being somewhat intimidated I drove past, but returned and circled around a few times. I finally stopped and entered the 15 foot diameter, 200 feet long culvert and experienced a mind-blowing acoustic. I took out the bass and joined in the music making frenzy. It was the beginning of what has become "Possessed."
