Support the Revolution!
Bang on a Can feels like a great big we these days. Since the very beginning, we've counted on you to help us make it all happen. We're blown away to think about how we got here - together. This is very much our story...
We presented an informal Marathon concert of diversely eccentric and important new music and you joined us. We started a killer live band (Bang on a Can All-Stars) and you came out to see and hear us and clamor for more. We gave commissions to brilliant under-heard composers and you funded them with donations large and small. We started a Summer Institute for young composers and players and you supported it and you supported them and you kept supporting them and their glowing careers. We made big, bold staged shows and you came and allowed our imaginations to enter yours for an evening. We created a dancing-arranging-commissioning 12-person-marching ensemble (Asphalt Orchestra) and you came and bopped along with us. We toured the world and you told all your friends. We recorded the great works of our time by outstanding ensembles and you listened and shared widely. We brought 60 creative young musicians from Pakistan to Congo to Burma to Indonesia to Egypt to Israel to Haiti and more, to collaborate and tour and culturally harmonize and you came along for the whole crazy colorful ride (OneBeat). And you continue to open your ears and hearts and even checkbooks to the wonderful and brilliant ideas and visions that populate the Bang on a Can universe.
After 26 years, more than 2,000 hours of concerts, 387 Banglewood alumni, 156 commissions, 86 albums released and dozens of arrangements of important works by world-class visionaries from every conceivable genre - we feel more energized, more passionate, more invested than ever. We hope you feel the same way.
We ask that you consider making a gift to the program that means the most to you.
• Our NYC Marathon brings tons of free Bang on a Can music to the masses, and this year we return to our longtime home The World Financial Center where two years ago we had 10,000 (!) listeners over 12 hours. A gift helps keep the concert free and adventurous as ever, with performances by the best ensembles and players in the world.
• The People's Commissioning Fund where we'll be premiering new works by Alvin Lucier, Richard Reed Parry, and Daniel Wohl and one other TBA. A gift of any size goes directly to making the pieces and their world premieres by the All-Stars possible.
• The Summer Festival at MASS MoCA will once again inspire the next generation to explore new frontiers. A gift to "Banglewood" keeps the tuition low and the ambitions big. The worldwide scene for new music grows and deepens with each "graduating" class.
We'll continue to break new ground and discover new musical worlds. We have you to thank for that. WE couldn't be more grateful.
Michael Gordon, David Lang, Julia Wolfe
