On May 13, the trailblazing Bang on a Can All-Stars celebrate the release of their latest recording, a 12-track CD and DVD package of Field Recordings, with a live performance of the complete album at The Greene Space at WQXR in downtown NYC. The concert begins at 7pm and will stream live via Q2 Music online. The Greene Space is an intimate concert venue, so tickets ($20) are limited.
Field Recordings features commissioned works by Tyondai Braxton, Mira Calix, Anna Clyne, Bryce Dessner, Florent Ghys, Michael Gordon, Jóhann Jóhannsson, David Lang, Christian Marclay, Steve Reich, Todd Reynolds, Julia Wolfe and Nick Zammuto. The bonus DVD features five collage-style, archival and “found footage” videos that have accompanied recent live performances by the All-Stars.
As David Lang describes it: “Field Recordings is a kind of ghost story. We asked composers from different parts of the music world to find a recording of something that already exists — a voice, a sound, a faded scrap of melody — and then write a new piece around it.” Field Recordings builds a bridge between the seen and the unseen, the present and absent, the future and the past, all channeled through the virtuosity and force of the electric Bang on a Can All-Stars.
Hosted by Q2 Music’s Helga Davis, the evening includes on-stage conversation with performers and composers. We hope to see you there!
