With The New Yorkers, Bang on a Can's co-artistic directors/composers Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe have created a concert that has been enhanced, stretched and challenged by exciting collaborations with Gotham's most visceral musicians, filmmakers, and visual artists. This concert celebration of New York's collective unconscious features musical performances by the unparalleled pioneering ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars, the string quartet Ethel, the Michael Gordon Band and genre-bending vocalist Theo Bleckmann. The New Yorkers pairs new music by Gordon, Lang, and Wolfe with cartoon projections by artist Ben Katchor, decayed film footage of New York buildings by Bill Morrison (creator of Decasia), and the work of urban video artist Doug Aitken. It features a controversial landmark 70s video by William Wegman, projections by visual artist Laurie Olinder, and a text by Lou Reed - all seamlessly staged by Barry Edelstein to create a work which reflects the singular experience of our city.
