La Voce

by: Louis Andriessen

The text in Louis Andriessen's La Voce is by the Italian existentialist poet, Cesare Pavese. The silence and the voice. The voice, rough and sweet, doesn't go back into the fresh silence... It is very sensuous and intense. The instrument has to correspond with the sound of the voice. When I whisper the poem, there are notes written in the score but not to be heard. It's really nice to talk and play at the same time. I love language. At first I thought of translating the poem into Hebrew, or English, but the sound of Italian is so beautiful and so important to the piece. Just the sound of the words.
