It Creeps Along

by: Miya Masaoka

It Creeps Along is based on a model of surface waves and subwaves that occasionally interfere with each other. I wanted to create a piece that evoked differing waves without using sustained tones. This current version of gesture-inspired technology is the Laser Koto, with the lasers designed by Donald Swearingen, the laser assembly built by Oliver D'Ciccio. The software patches were developed collaboratively with programmer Matt Wright at CNMAT, UC Berkeley. The interface was designed together with a team of STEIM technicians, over a period of several residencies in Amsterdam from 1996-2000.
