Support the Revolution!
With big, big thanks for all your support of the music through the years, we once again turn to you for help to make it all happen. Since we last did so, we've been to South Korea and Belgium and Argentina and the Netherlands and Scotland and Germany and Turkey and France and Moscow. We've been to PA and CA and MA and DC and OK and NM and AZ and NJ and KS and OH and GA and all over NY.
We commissioned more than a dozen new works, staged Marathons, programmed more than 50 concerts, produced programs for major museums, recorded and/or released a dozen new records, hosted 30 incredible international musicians for a month of collaboration and touring on the West Coast, broadcast concerts, and shared videos and recordings of our performances as widely as is digitally possible.
With so much going on, it's hard to single out one thing that we do. But we'd definitely like to highlight one program that is incredibly meaningful to us - The Bang on a Can Summer Festival at MASS MoCA in the Berkshires. Some call it "Banglewood." And it may just be the best thing we've done for the future of the music we champion.
Thirteen years ago we threw caution to the wind and told the world we wanted the best 20-something composers and players to join us to rehearse, compose, learn and perform together in an enormous museum in an old factory town in the mountains. We were hopeful that our enthusiasm would be enough to lure a few brave souls to the hills for a couple weeks. We were amazed by the phenomenal strength and number of applications from musical artists ready and able to remake their world. We nourished them, they nourished us, and to date from the imaginations of more than 400 Banglewood alums the world has changed -- through new festivals, ensembles, major new compositions, and a thriving scene for new music, not just in NYC, but worldwide. We can't pick up a newspaper or check a blog without reading about our young friends and their extraordinary accomplishments.
That's why it's so important. Our sonic world keeps getting bigger because we keep embracing the world's brightest and best of tomorrow. We hope Banglewood will survive and thrive and remain within reach for struggling young players and composers. And to encourage you to not just give but to come join us, every single gift of $125 or more to Banglewood means we will reserve two seats for you at the Summer Marathon on August 1, 2015. We will invite you to a pre-Marathon reception too. And we will send you a CD of selections from last year's Banglewood performances, chosen from more than 30 concerts from the summer of '14. Here's a video that MASS MoCA made that gives a bit of a sense of why this festival is so crucial:
Of course, we absolutely need support for the NYC Bang on a Can Marathon too. And for the People's Commissioning Fund. And to keep the lights on and the engine humming. You've always come through for us, and we offer music and tickets in exchange for your generosity to your favorite program as an incentive. We want you to hear it all! But we simply can't do it without your help. You've always come through for us. Thank you for being part of this strange and wonderful ride we call Bang on a Can.
